Week 12 of IP EXAM......!!!! Graduation :-)

March 18, 2013 Monday
Final Exam: I only slept for 3 hours before the exam, trying to cram all the recipes in my head.  Everyone said Intermediate Pastry was the most difficult program comparing to Basic Pastry and Superior Pastry programs.  Well, let me tell you it's true!! We all were so stressed out about the exam, and we had reasons for that.  We needed to memorize 15 recipes in total (including the ingredients, the qualities, and the steps) for Bon d'economat which worth 4.5% of the total marks.  And of course, we needed to know how to make them all, so when we drew an envelop of the actually product in practical, we would finish it in 2.5 hours.  I got Pâte a choux (Petits fours) for my Bon d'economat, and Bavaroise aux trois chocolat for my practical exam.  Well, didn't do well on Bon d'economat..... so I moved on..... LOL I thought I did pretty well on my cake.  I knew what I was doing, my mousses set, I finished early..... but you never know until you see your final marks on transcript.  Oh, the funny part on my exam was that I set the oven at 250F instead of 350F.... stupidly, didn't find out until Daneet and my lady fingers were inside for more than 5 min. and told by Vicky.  Then she cranked it up to 350F for us, but we were so focused on doing the mousse, we totally forgot about the oven.  Chef Hervé came to me and secretly kicked my feet 3 times, I was wondering what the heck he was doing.  Then he looked at the oven, now I realized the lady fingers had been in the oven for probably 20 min.  Thank God, it actually turned out fine when I pulled them out.  Since the cake was taken to the panel of guest judges to taste and criticize, I had no picture to show here.

I was so happy and relieved after the exam, was chatting with Group A students who had the exam after our group.  Then I went home for a bit, and went back to school to wait for Cindy, Dina and Jason to finish the exam, so we could have dinner together.  We ended up having sushi in Sushi Bento where Jason, of course, didn't like.

Wilbrod House 1: Tika texted me asking me where I was.  She wanted to give me her notes so that she had less thing to bring back to Thailand.  Thanks for everything, Tika! I met her at Loblaw's first, then walked to infomous Wilbrod House where 17 students were residing.  I always wanted to visit this house, 'cos I heard so many stories about it (or the people who were living there), so I thought it would be great to do it with Tika before she went back to Thailand.  Most of the students went home for the holidays, and I met Bruna, Robyn, and Fabienne who were still there.  Just imagine 17 students shared 1 kitchen...... I know I could never live with so many people in one house.  Well, I was glad that I got a chance to see the house.  Then Tika and I met Cynthia at a bus stop, we were meeting Cindy, Erin and Chad in The Manx http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/250/1346739/restaurant/Centretown-Downtown/The-Manx-Ottawa for dinner.  We were talking about the exam and the chefs, we had so much fun.  Then, we went to have ice-cream in Cold Stone http://www.coldstonecreamery.com

Wilbrod House 2: Cynthia and I were getting hair cut in Chinatown, and Cindy met us in the hair salon.     Then we had Pho at New Pho Bo Ga La http://www.newphobogala.com

Then, we went back to my place, and grabbed 2 locks and cake boxes to school, so that we could reserve our lockers for next term.  Since Cindy had never been to Wilbrod House, she called Tika to see if we could go there.  It was so nice of Tika to cook us dinner AGAIN, Fabienne also joined us.

Fran: It was nice to see Fran this morning, she was kind enough to drop off the ingredients she had for practice at my place.  I had fun with her in our group this term, and she would be going back to Switzerland soon.  I will miss her, and hopefully I can visit her in Switzerland one day!

It's All About Food: Cindy, Cynthia, Jason, Tika and I went to our favourite place, Art Is In http://www.artisinbakery.com for lunch.  I ordered Curry Meatball, Cauliflower with rice, and we had pastries afterwards.

Cynthia had to volunteer in Convention Centre later, so we went to Chapters bookstore to hang, and booked the hotel rooms for our trip.  Then, Tika, Cindy and I just went to Loblaw's to get stuff, but we ended up getting lobsters! Tika enjoyed cooking for us, and we definitely enjoyed her cooking! :-) It was a bit terrifying to put the lobsters into the hot boiling pot.  Beside lobsters, she also made other dishes.  Thanks for Tika, the smoke detector went off! That's why you would see me fanning the detector with a silicon pad.  We didn't start the meal until Cynthia and Shirley finished the volunteering work and showed up at my place around 10pm.

Graduation Ceremony @ National Gallery of Canada: I was thankful that Mandy and James came to Ottawa from Toronto this morning for my graduation.  They arrived around 2pm, we had lunch in Korean restaurant, then came back to my place and got ready.  I remember last term, Dina and I were walking in the snowstorm, and our shoes were wet stepping into the snow.  This time, we were taking a cab! I was happy to see my classmates.  Some of them like Fabienne, Tania, and Stefania won't be coming back for Superior Pastry.  They will be missed.  Mandy and James must be bored the whole time, but they will have one more to go through (Superior Pastry)! After the ceremony, we all went to have dinner in Blue Cactus Bar and Grill.  We waited forever for food.... And Mandy ordered a steak burger, and got a steak instead!
