Week 7 of SP

May 13, 2013 Monday
Dinner with Melina: After Melina finished Intermediate Pastry program, she got married in China.  And now she just got back and packed all her stuff for the final move to China.  Cindy, Geordan, Erin P. and I met her in school today, and decided to have dinner in MuGoongHwa Korean restaurant on Rideau Street.  We had a great time, thanks Melina for the meal! And have a safe trip to China! All the best with your business!! :-)

Lunch Shift in Bistro: I was scheduled to work a lunch shift in the bistro (Signatures) http://signaturesrestaurant.com with Quinn from 9am-2pm today.  We had fun doing churros, peler à vic (orange supreme), and plated desserts.
 Churros
 Quinn was deep-frying the churros
Peler à vic (orange supreme) with my boning knife! I did tons of them!

We helped plating the desserts!

Written Test and Demo #109: We first finished the written test, then Chef Hervé Chabert showed us how to decorate a wedding cake (Gateau de mariage)

After class, Sara and whole bunch of staff came and presented some gifts to Chef Hervé and 3 classmates, Lisa (2nd placed), Jocelyne (3rd placed), and Daneet who competed in the Skill Ontario Competition.

Term Evaluation: Had a 10-minute evaluation session with Chef Hervé, and I guess so far, I've been doing fine in class.  My problem would be lack of confidence..... other than that, I got some good comments, as good student, good classmate, always finished products first...... :-) Chef said if I decided to have my own business tomorrow, I would be ready.  In the end, he said after the program is over, I can give him my blog, he's interested in reading it.

After our evaluation, Cindy, Jason and I went to have ice-cream in Menchie's http://www.menchies.com and to finish our sketch for the sugar showpiece exam tomorrow.

Jason and I were so concentrated that we didn't even know Cindy was taking a picture of us.
Fish and Chips for dinner :-)

Sugar Showpiece Exam: Today I got awaken by earthquake this morning, apparently, it was a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. http://www.earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/recent_eq/2013/20130517.1343/index-eng.php At first, I thought it was a big truck passing by on the street.  Then, a friend in Toronto and Chad (here in Ottawa who just lives across the street) were posting earthquake comments on Facebook.  It was our sugar showpiece exam today.  Group A had it in the morning, they got evacuated in the middle of the exam due to the earthquake.  They only stayed outside for about 10 mins, but when they went back to the kitchen, all the sugar was cooled down.  There was a long line up for microwave to heat up the sugar! :-) Our group (B) had it in the afternoon, I was a little nervous about it at first.  Chef Hervé was in the kitchen in the beginning, then disappeared.  Chef Jocelyn and Chef Arnaud were there observing us.  We actually had so much time that, Jocelyne and I were saying we could have finished the showpiece before the break.  We thought we could not start assembling before the break, so we were killing time by making more flowers, and sanding the pastillage.  When I carried my piece to 2A, Chef Eric and Chef Didier were there grading other pieces.  Everyone did a very good job in my opinion.

After the exam, Cindy, Jason and I had Korean food for dinner.
